Application Server

Application server is a server computer on a computer network dedicated to running certain software application (as opposed to e.g. a file server or print server).Generally, an application server is a software engine that delivers applications to client computers. Moreover, an application server should handle most, if not all, of the business logic and data access of the application. The main benefits of application server technology are ease of application development and centralization. Although the term Application server applies to all platforms, it has become synonymous with the Sun Microsystems J2EE platform. It has also come to encompass servers of web-based applications, although the paradigm is more similar to mainframe based applications than traditional client-server.

Mail Server

A computer in a network that provides "post office" facilities. It stores incoming mail for distribution to users and forwards outgoing mail through the appropriate channel. The term may refer to just the software that performs this service, which can reside on a machine with other services.

Communication Server

A specialized network server that provides access to resources on the network for users not directly attached to the network or that permits network users to access external resources not directly attached to the network.

Web Server
A computer that delivers (serves up) Web pages. Every Web server has an IP address and possibly a domain name. For example, if you enter the URL http://www.pcwebopedia.com/index.html in your browser, this sends a request to the server whose domain name is pcwebopedia.com. The server then fetches the page named index.html and sends it to your browser. Any computer can be turned into a Web server by installing server software and connecting the machine to the Internet. ...

Fax Server
An external device that accepts client messages from a telemessaging platform, converts them into the format used by fax machines, and delivers them to the client's fax machine. Many fax delivery units have been expanded to send alphanumeric pages and e-mail messages as well.

Print Server
A thin server that connects a printer to a network and allows users to share the printer. It may be a separate unit or a plug-in card in the printer.

Define Outlook and Outlook Express
Outlook
(Microsoft Outlook) - An email software that allows a user to send and receive email, keep an address book, sort and organize messages, filter messages. Often it is just used as an email client and users are unaware of the other information management features of the tool. This is true with many email software tools.

Outlool Express
Microsoft Outlook Express is an email and news client bundled with operating systems and the Internet Explorer web browser by Microsoft, and also available as a no-charge download for the "classic" Apple Macintosh operating system (although not for the newer Mac OS X, where it has been replaced by Microsoft Entourage, which costs money as part of Microsoft Office).

Microsoft Exchange Server is a collaborative software server from Microsoft, positioned as a rival to the Lotus Notes / Domino server from IBM and recently challenged by a number of Linux-based competitors, first and foremost Scalix. The use of Microsoft Exchange is very widespread in large corporations using Microsoft infrastructure solutions. Among other things, Microsoft Exchange manages electronic mail, and is thus a popular mail server.
